start the Day off RIGHT w/Jake One, Freeway & Brother Ali

I been banging the mess out of this song The Truth by Jake One f/Freeway and Brother Ali at work for the last few days...

This song was my first exposure to Brother Ali. I looked into him a while back at the behest of my friend and Philly resident Jamar, and was blown away. Freeway smashes his verse over a raw beat by the mighty Jake One, but the reason I couldn't stop playing this joint this week is Ali's honest yet rugged rumination on his hood upbringing that anchors the track:
"Hungry pacin' in a bus station with my nuts hangin, but I never sold base, muthaf*ck Reagan..."
Chills, son! Anyways, click here to peep my previous post for more Ali-centric youTubery, and have a great day!

Uhura speaks...

Here's some great video of Nichelle Nichols speaking casually at the 2008 EAST COAST BLACK AGE OF COMICS CONVENTION in Philly. She builds on her brief stint in Blaxploitation, her iconic role on Star Trek, and her run-in with MLK. You can catch Ms. Nichols as one of the featured guests at the Women of Sci-Fi Convention coming up at the end of the month in the north Dallas... but for now, peep this clip

"Join us January 29-30 at the Plano Convention Center as we welcome some of TVs biggest Sci-Fi ladies. Guests include Morena Baccarin (V and Firefly), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica's Six), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck), NIchelle Nichols (Star Trek Uhura), Alaina Huffman (Stargate SGU and Smallville), Erin Gray (Buck Rogers), Yvonne Craig (Batgirl), and more!"

Start the day off RIGHT w/Brother Ali

my Philly-bred big- brother- in-comics Jamar took a break from slobbering all over Kanye to turn me on to this dude Brother Ali. Dude is straight mustard*... no fast cars, no big booty chicks, no bullshit. Hard raps grown folks need not feel guilty for liking over beats that should move you... A winning combo unless you're in the mood for some dumb shit.

This video for Breaking Dawn (from his new album Us)is fresh, too. It's appealing to me when singers don't appear in a video, letting the subject matter take center stage (or, when there IS subject matter). Something different, for a change. (for the record, I'm sure Brother Ali enjoys nice cars and the occasional big booty chick, so you don't have to email me any cell phone pics).

holla!
