Start the day off Right w/Ryu Black aka Mecca Godzilla

That dude Mecca Godzilla decided to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Street Fighter II the way any sane rapper should: by making a new Hip Hop opera album Perfect Heaven (天): The Ryu Black Musical, and this is the first video from the record.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this Long Island native is internationally known to rock the microphone... This video was filmed in Japan by Tokyo skate hero Teddy Wilkins. Black is joined in the video by Taiwanese Jamaican Dancehall choreographer Ruby Red.
And I would be sleeping on my people if I didn't point out that Mecca's got one of GhettoManga's favorite young cartoonists, the mighty D-pi (Homeland Security classifies him as Ron Wimberly, but you ain't heard that from me) on album art. Anyways, you can cop Perfect Heaven (天): The Ryu Black Musical in digital and hardcopy formats from his label's online store.
have a nice day!

9 minute Preview... rhymes with "Wonder Bats"

I'm sure this is coming down soon, so enjoy it while you can...

I'm still not clear if this series is meant to take place centuries after the eighties series, or if it is a pure reboot. I like the idea that the Sword of Omens is assembling a team similar to the original one to face the threat of a resurrected Mumm-Ra. If they did that, they get bonus points. The new series debuts July 29th on Cartoon Network.

start the day off Right w/Akua Naru

This chick got the world rapped up in her locks, fam! Listen...

Do yourself a favor and quit complaining about hip hop. There is a lotta stuff out there that you don't like. There always was. But there's a lotta fly stuff out there too, and if you don't stop crying about the proliferation of wack stuff, you will sleep on people doing it right, like your girl Akua Naru.

My internet compatriot Sarafina put me on to Akua's facebook page last night, and it took me about 90 seconds to become a fan of her throaty flow. So, being the man I am, I went and snagged some youTubery for her video The Backflip, the first single from her album The Journey Aflame, which you can stream via the miracle of bandcamp.
I'm not gonna say that "Akua is just what hip hop needs" because besides the fact that it is a totally cliche and corny thing to say, I don't believe hip hop is missing anything.  It's totally disrespectful to all the dope female emcees out there rapping the paint off the walls (Bahamadia, Jean Grae, Staahr, Boog Brown, and the Vicious Cycle chicks, just to name a few...) to crown every new chick you come across that make your head nod a little, but it is totally fair to say that Akua appears to be cut from the right cloth. Despite what your favorite music television show or channel might try to tell you, the tapestry women have woven in the world of hip hop is a beautiful and significant one. Suffice to say that Akua is adding a nice thread to the culture...

Having said all that, if you think that this New Haven, CT native is just what YOU needed...
You're pro'lly not alone...

NEW VIDEO- "Rap Money" By the Co-Op

MoNey Stax and The Rapture, known collectively as Conscience Operations (or The Co-Op for those who don't like the big words) are here with the video for their new single, Rap Money...

I first became aware of Stax as half of the mighty female rap duo Vicious Cycle (along side the incomparable Neeky Devero), and met her husband (known in hip hop circles as The Rapture) at a friend's birthday party before I knew he could rhyme. Both of them have the chops when it comes to rhyming and getting their proverbial grind on to turn raps to riches, and they're flexing a bit of both in this video. This song is a brief autobio of their marriage, which is grounded in their love for hip hop. But you'll only know that if you listen to the words, cause this doesn't sound like no love song! These two are all about the bangers, and the beats and rhymes of Rap Money are committed to a producing a screw-faced head nod, while the content just might warm your heart if you let it! Brilliant...

Anyways, Rap Money will be on The Co-Op's self-titled EP which is due to drop in September 2011, but you can download the track free right now, 'cause I guess they're feeling generous.

start the Day off RIGHT w/Jake One, Freeway & Brother Ali

I been banging the mess out of this song The Truth by Jake One f/Freeway and Brother Ali at work for the last few days...

This song was my first exposure to Brother Ali. I looked into him a while back at the behest of my friend and Philly resident Jamar, and was blown away. Freeway smashes his verse over a raw beat by the mighty Jake One, but the reason I couldn't stop playing this joint this week is Ali's honest yet rugged rumination on his hood upbringing that anchors the track:
"Hungry pacin' in a bus station with my nuts hangin, but I never sold base, muthaf*ck Reagan..."
Chills, son! Anyways, click here to peep my previous post for more Ali-centric youTubery, and have a great day!

Start the Day off Right w/Aesop Rock

I never got around to buying Aesop Rock's 2007 album None Shall Pass, but I need to get it... I spent some time pouring through some youTubery from the record, and it's all good stuff. Case in point, peep this video for Pigs which also features Aesop's album cover artist Jeremy Fish painting a SWEET mural... and because I am a man of and for the people, I threw in the official video for the title track too...

have a great day!

start the day off Right w/ the mighty Bavu Blakes & D-Madness

If you been reading awhile, you know I'm a big fan of Bavu Blakes, and I became a fan of Bavu the old-fashioned way: by seeing him perform admirably on stage with a live band. Here's a recent performance he did at the Austin Music People Launch Party...

D-Madness is a freaking problem on drums and keys simultaneously, and Bavu gives a nice performance too. The sound isn't great at first, but they get it all figured out in time for Smiley Faces and Southern Man to ring true. If this is your first time rocking with Mr. Blakes, click here for more BavuTube activity.

start the day off RIGHT w/Xzibit

If you're one of my Facebook friends (or maybe a nosy co-worker), you may already know I was bumping the hell out of Xzibit's classic video for his equally classic banger What U See is What U Get all damn day at work yesterday...

This video is a freaking problem! Besides the fact that Xzibit spits like a volcano on this track, this video does a great job of approximating the way that good rappers create mental collages with words... My Facebook bredren were chiming in about how dope this piece was back in the day, and we pretty much all agreed that we lost it when X stagedives after the last verse... One cat was like "I remember I saw this video for the first time - I jumped up, ran to the store and bought all his albums.." and I believe it, because this joint definitely makes me think I need to cop  40 Dayz & 40 Nightz the classic album this came off of... but anyways, I figured I'd drop this here, since most of y'all probably need to wake up...

start the day off right w/ Big K.R.I.T.

Peep the youTube for the single Dreamin' and cop the free download of Big K.R.I.T.'s new album, Return of 4eva...

There's been a lot of media hooplah about KRIT, but I have been immune to all that for a long time (I'm more concerned about being right than being first). There are very few outlets whose word I trust to turn me on to new music... one of them is my dude GoldiGold's Jungle45 blog, where he insists the Mississippi native is the real deal. Peep the video and click here to download the album Return of 4eva and let me know what you think!

#Bavutube- "Eddie Long"

You probably clicked on the link to take a break from laughing at Charlie Sheen and Chris Brown by laughing at Eddie Long some more. After all, what makes you feel better about how much of a screw up you are than pointing at someone else who is out there effing up royally? I hate to disappoint you, but the new track Eddie Long doesn't have any gay jokes in it, just well- constructed- yet- conversational rhymes in the broadcast baritone we've come to expect from the mighty Bavu Blakes.

Don't be scurred to launch the youTube viewer, though, heathens... Bavu isn't gonna browbeat you about judging others while you are so messed up... He disarms himself of any self-righteousness he might'a been packing by turning all five fingers back at himself in some full-frontal confessional type isht:
"If it made me sound good I would go record it.
A whale in a toilet. Thought I was so important.
Talkin' on a cell phone I don't even own,
but I'ma cast MY stone at Eddie Long.

Wanna feel better though I'm knowin' I been deadly wrong,
so I'm throwin' my stone at Eddie Long."
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I've been following Bavu's music for a long time. When I first discovered him, he was the highlight of a weekly freestyle show, spitting weapons-grade freestyle raps over a dope live band, mic crushed in his right hand and a cold glass of brown liquid in the other. As he said in one song:
"In Austin I cut my teeth on lyrics/
got drunk and went off for whoever was nearest.
This was the mid-nineties/
when rap was still grimy/
right before it got shiny
I had my boys behind me..."
He was the kinda rapper that would be right at home swapping sixteens, blunt hits and groupies with Common, Black Thought, or whatever other semi-conscious rapper that was likely to tap your girl back then. Through sheer force of my stannery*, I managed to get on speaking terms with Bavu, who via the magic of the internet, contacted me about doing some art for him.  In our correspondence about the project, Bavu said that he was drawn more and more into Christian rap. As an obviously spiritual dude with lots of introspective philosophical commentary in the subtext of his rhymes, he had already been leaning that way: severely limiting the use of profanity. Rapping about sex a little less, and love a little more. But even though I'm a Christian myself, I get worried when I hear dudes are going full retarded on some Christian isht... I like lots of Christian rappers, but I'd seen too many dope rappers turn into corny ass preachers spitting self-righteous, poorly-constructed Sunday school lessons over terrible production to think it couldn't happen again.
Fortunately for me, Bavu understands that God created him to be a dope emcee, or at the very least, maybe he just sticks to what he knows.  He earned a spot on my favorite emcee list by writing rhymes about his own experiences and thoughts, sometimes sharing the wisdom he's collected, other times having the sense to admit he doesn't know anything. Whether it's talking about  the ups and downs of his career(s), his progression into the grown man roles of husband and father, or championing the brand of soulful hip hop he believes in, Bavu continues to hold the mic right.
Click any pic for a link to more dope music from Mi(ni)ster Blakes, or check out his reverbnation page for more music (without my commentary). If you're anything like me, you'll wanna hit his blog too.
