PREVIEW: Dziva Jones Cover art

Here's Stanley Weaver Jr's cover art for Aminah Armour's comic about the bodyguard and crimefighter with the brickhouse frame, Dziva Jones. Peep the pencils below...

Weaver (Street Team) is the cover artist for the four issue series (this is the cover to #3, I think), which is written by Armour with art by Ashley A. Woods (Millenia War). The first issue of Dziva Jones is already out. You can click here for a SWEET 3 page preview, or just go cop it on Indyplanet! I will keep you posted on new Dziva Jones news when I get it, and write you a review of the comic once I get my hands on it!

Getting good Feedback about our Luke Cage Tribute Issue!

Under cover of darkness, I sent out copies of that Luke Cage Tibute issue (lovingly referred to as the "Sweet Christmas Special" even though it's obviously NOT christmastime) to my subscribers, preorderers and other assorted deserving peeps last Wednesday, and the first reverberations started hitting my various inboxes this weekend...
"the new 'Luke Cage' issue of GhettoManga is off the hook! It rocks in sooo many ways. Loved the way you broke down Bendis' Luke Cage in Alias...."

"How did you get Mike Hawthorne to draw a pinup?!? He's one of my favorites artists!"
-Barry K.

"Mini Battle Men is my new shit! Tell Zees he got a winner on his hands, son!"
-Big Shane
"Wow! Dan Fu's work is very promising! His writing and art are both loose and sharp... a great find!"
-Sara Q.

Yo, I really appreciate that so many people took the time to drop a line, tweet, comment or whatever. The magazine is a labor of love, and every comic, illustration and article is chosen by me. I try to take criticism objectively and constructively, but I definitely take all the love personal.   And juuust in case you haven't bought a copy or subscription yet...

Here's the Sales Pitch:
The GhettoManga Sweet Christmas Special features a gallery of tribute art dedicated to Marvel's resident soul brother #1, with art by lots of underground talent that you need to get familiar with. There's also new comics from Zees Moreno (Mini Battle Men) and Dan Fu (The Retriever), plus articles by Jay Potts (World of Hurt), Corance Davis (GodBody) and more... Back issues of the 52 page full color magazine are already available on IndyPlanet.  You can order single issues for ten bucks each (includes shipping), or subscribe
and get 4 issues for the price of 3!

So, thanks again! Production has already started on the next issue, and of course, you know where to find me...

PREVIEW- Saint 2

I've run into Wayne Jackson of Austin-based micropublisher Urban Senate at conventions several times and found him to be a cool guy, so I was pleased to see that he had tapped my dude Erik Reeves to draw the interiors for his book Saint, which is now up on IndyPlanet. Erik emailed me these preview pages last night, so I figured you'd wanna see them asap!
Here's the Sales Pitch:
There are no space ships; even if escape were possible, there is no place to go... Other worldly beings watch, as the Earth crumbles and Humanity marches toward extinction. They offer a solution: Your world shall be restored in exchange for your servitude. Humanity's fate now rests with their new Gods or transcends determinism within the hands of their Saints.
In this issue of Saint; General Nicholie Peczersky's courage during the war has earned him the rank of Regent along with the burdens of rebuilding and safe guarding humanity. His troubles increase when Mankind is visited by deific extraterestrial beings know only as the Quantum. World wide disasters, Phantasms and now, Aliens; the work of a Regent is never done...

This seems like an ill premise! Like I said, you can click here to cop Saint #2 on Indyplanet.

In Stores Now (I think)- "Starborn" Trade Paperback!

Yeah, you know I'm dying to get my hands on that Starborn trade paperback! I read the first few issues and really dug 'em so this is definitely on the BegBorrowSteal list...

because writing "Marvel Style" isn't hands-off enough, now Stan Lee got dudes writing his comics for him altogether. So "Stan the Man" went all Mister Brainwash on us and has enlisted a gang of dudes to write and draw his signature line of books at BOOM! Studios for him... the only one I've checked out is Starborn, the science-fiction hero joint by Chris Roberson and Khary ("like Atari") Randolph, and it's dope!  Now that joint is in stores in trade paperback. 128 full color pages for ten bucks is a great deal! I don't think that's a sale price, just the publisher being nice, I guess... I saw a blurb on CBR that said this is in stores as of July 6th, but Amazon says it drops the first week of August, so check your local shop to see if it's out yet, but I'm definitely copping this one and you should too! If you don't do comicshops, just pre-order it on Amazon. If you wanna see more preview pages, just click here to check my earlier posts!

Wishlist- "Our Love is Real" by Sam Humphries & Steven Sanders #WTF

I saw a preview poster for writer Sam Humphries (CBGB; Fraggle Rock) and artist Steven Sanders' (Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age, SWORD; Five Fists of Science) new self-published comic Our Love is Real and I have to admit, I'm curious where they're going with it! I gaffled a 6 page preview and  posted it with some of my patented blah blah below...
Here's the sales pitch:
FIVE YEARS AFTER THE AIDS VACCINE...Plantsexuals riot in the streets for equal rights. Humans fall in love with dogs. And crystals are more than just jewelry. A chance encounter on the job changes a riot cop's life forever as he finds himself caught in a bizarre love triangle that blurs romance, crime, and lust beyond recognition.

OUR LOVE IS REAL is a bold new sci-fi one-shot written by Sam Humphries (one of Wizard's "Five Writers to Watch in 2011";
CBGB; Fraggle Rock) and illustrated by Steven Sanders (Uncanny X-Men: The Heroic Age; SWORD; Five Fists of Science).

Marriage equality is a real hot-button topic right now, so what better way to tackle it than making an exquisitely drawn comic farce that turns the whole debate on its ear. At least that's what I'm hoping for! Of course, it's possible that it's just gonna be just some well-drawn preaching. But I don't think so...

But I'm just guessing. OLIR went on sale today. You can buy it on the website as a digital download or a physical copy. You can also buy it in stores in selected cities. Click here for more info. I can imagine this post might insight spirited political dialogue, and while that's totally not my intent, I can live with it...

start the day off Right w/Adam WarRock

If you find yourself in the mood for some light-hearted nerdcore rap shit, feast your ears on this dude Adam WarRock...

this song Nerd Corps off the EP This Man... This Emcee! is probably the best introduction to WarRock and what he's about, but Sad Ultron and Fantomex and the Nerd Corps remix are fresh too. A lotta nerdcore artists are just extroverted dorks who can't sing so they think they can rhyme, but I have observed WarRock interacting with other hip hop heads on Twitter, and feel comfortable that he really loves hip hop. I can imagine that he tried sulking around trying to be a typical rap tough guy before finding his niche rocking comics inspired rhymes...

WarRock has a new EP dedicated to that jewel in the nineties comics crown... yes, he loves him some New Warriors, so if you do too you'll definitely enjoy this free download. Click here to cop it. While your slow ass connection is doing what it do(es. Sorry, I'm to old to say "do what it do" with a straight face), go bookmark his blog so you won't miss the next freebie! Dude is pretty prolific, so if you like his music, he will take good care of you.
have a great day!

PREVIEW- "Malinky Robot" by Sonny Liew

You know how sometimes you have artists who you go crazy for, but you don't remember them until you see some more of their work... at which time you go crazy for them all over again? Maybe it sounds weird, but it perfectly describes my relationship with the work of Sonny Liew (My Faith in Frankie, Wonderland, Sense and Sensibility, Re-Gifters, Liquid City). So I went crazy yesterday when I found out that Image was dropping a collection of his comic Malinky Robot from the venerated FLIGHT anthology. Here's some random pages below that I repatriated from the internets...
Here's the Sales Pitch:

Street urchins Atari and Oliver are out to steal bicycles, watch Giant Robot movies and spend some Large Denominational Bills!
MALINKY ROBOT collects five stories by Eisner-nominated artist Sonny Liew (
My Faith in Frankie, Wonderland, Sense and Sensibility) set in a near-future city of San'ya.

A recipient of the Xeric Award and Best Science Fiction Album award at the Utopiales International SF Festival, and featured in the acclaimed Flight anthologies, MALINKY ROBOT blends dystopic sci-fi and indie sensibilities into a uniquely charming, oddball world.

PLUS! Pinups by Mike Allred, Roger Langridge, Skottie Young, and more!

I haven't read the latest FLIGHT joints (the series is ending with volume 8 by the way), but I have loved everything of Sonny's that I have read (I didn't read Sense and Sensibility, but my wife says it's awesome!), and I'm looking forward to getting this as soon as I can! Malinky Robot drops August 15th.
