In Stores Now (I think)- "Starborn" Trade Paperback!

Yeah, you know I'm dying to get my hands on that Starborn trade paperback! I read the first few issues and really dug 'em so this is definitely on the BegBorrowSteal list...

because writing "Marvel Style" isn't hands-off enough, now Stan Lee got dudes writing his comics for him altogether. So "Stan the Man" went all Mister Brainwash on us and has enlisted a gang of dudes to write and draw his signature line of books at BOOM! Studios for him... the only one I've checked out is Starborn, the science-fiction hero joint by Chris Roberson and Khary ("like Atari") Randolph, and it's dope!  Now that joint is in stores in trade paperback. 128 full color pages for ten bucks is a great deal! I don't think that's a sale price, just the publisher being nice, I guess... I saw a blurb on CBR that said this is in stores as of July 6th, but Amazon says it drops the first week of August, so check your local shop to see if it's out yet, but I'm definitely copping this one and you should too! If you don't do comicshops, just pre-order it on Amazon. If you wanna see more preview pages, just click here to check my earlier posts!

PREVIEW- "Malinky Robot" by Sonny Liew

You know how sometimes you have artists who you go crazy for, but you don't remember them until you see some more of their work... at which time you go crazy for them all over again? Maybe it sounds weird, but it perfectly describes my relationship with the work of Sonny Liew (My Faith in Frankie, Wonderland, Sense and Sensibility, Re-Gifters, Liquid City). So I went crazy yesterday when I found out that Image was dropping a collection of his comic Malinky Robot from the venerated FLIGHT anthology. Here's some random pages below that I repatriated from the internets...
Here's the Sales Pitch:

Street urchins Atari and Oliver are out to steal bicycles, watch Giant Robot movies and spend some Large Denominational Bills!
MALINKY ROBOT collects five stories by Eisner-nominated artist Sonny Liew (
My Faith in Frankie, Wonderland, Sense and Sensibility) set in a near-future city of San'ya.

A recipient of the Xeric Award and Best Science Fiction Album award at the Utopiales International SF Festival, and featured in the acclaimed Flight anthologies, MALINKY ROBOT blends dystopic sci-fi and indie sensibilities into a uniquely charming, oddball world.

PLUS! Pinups by Mike Allred, Roger Langridge, Skottie Young, and more!

I haven't read the latest FLIGHT joints (the series is ending with volume 8 by the way), but I have loved everything of Sonny's that I have read (I didn't read Sense and Sensibility, but my wife says it's awesome!), and I'm looking forward to getting this as soon as I can! Malinky Robot drops August 15th.

Graphic Novel (P)REVIEW- "reMIND Vol 1" by Jason Brubaker

I was in a bad mood the first time I went to the  work-in-progress blog for Jason Brubaker's Graphic Novel reMIND, but one of my readers who actually BUYS my magazine insisted that I check it out, so I did (NOTE: buying stuff might just get you on my good side, but I make no promises...). What I found there initially threatened to send my bad mood into full-blown clinical depression!
"Dang Samax..." you may say. "Was it THAT bad?"
No. It was that good...

As you may know, I actually draw comics myself from time to time (when I'm not being a dork and not drawing them), and nothing makes a slumping cartoonist feel like a bigger cheesedick than stumbling onto another cartoonist who makes it look so DAMN EASY! I only looked at a few pages of Brubaker's comic-book-under-construction blog for his hella weird opus before it became clear to me that I was not on my game. Not just the writing, drawing, coloring game... but clearly this dude was approaching the self-publishing of his book with the same flame that was lighting his pages on fire, and for a minute or two, I was really pissed...
Then, I reminded myself (no pun intended) that his achievements as a cartoonist or self-publisher, took nothing away from me. In fact, since he was so transparent about the process on his blog, I might actually learn something from his efforts. So with new determination, I launched into his posts, basically an online journal of the development of the comic, and his adventures in herding it through the printing process. Brubaker had applied for and been awarded a Xeric Grant to help fund his comic, and was in the process of raising the remaining funds for the book on Kickstarter. After reading the pages below, I put in my pledge to preorder the lush hardcover that I pulled out of my mailbox today.

These pages are giving you the merest glimpse into the weirdness that ensues in the book, where we learn what's REALLY under that water and where Victuals the Cat wandered off to, and what kinda weird stuff your girl Sonja has been tinkering on in that lighthouse! This is clearly a book Brubaker has been screwing around with for years, and end result is very rich and satisfying. The book is a real page-turner that would have drove me crazy following as a weekly webcomic. As it is, the only thing that kept me from screaming "NOOOOOOO!!!" in full-on Hollywood melodrama when I reached the last page's cliff-hanger ending was the knowledge that my 2 year old daughter was sleeping in the next room.
Anyways, in case you can't tell, I highly recommend reMIND. Like I said, once I read a little of it, I knew I had to read it first in graphic novel form first. After a typical long Monday shuttling my wife and daughter around and drudgerous drawing on the computer at work, finding this in my mailbox was a real shot in the arm! And I'm not even SHOWING the best stuff... reMIND (Vol. 1) drops  July 21st... and you can click here to pre-order this fresh arse hardcover on Amazon for the low low price of $25... or you can click here to read it online for the even lower low price of free. Whichever way you hafta read it, just see that you do, by any means!

3 Reasons why YOU need to buy Dark Horse Presents #2

I didn't buy the first issue of Dark Horse Presents that featured the debut of new multi-part serials by Neal Adams (his cover art on the left) and Richard Corben (two creators I've loved for decades), and an interview and sneak peak at Frank Miller's prequel comic (soon to be movie) Xerxes... but I still have a few REALLY good reasons why I GOTTA cop #2, and frankly, you should too...

#1) Sanford Greene's new joint Rotten Apple debuts... If you haven't been following Sanford Greene's work since the LedHeavy days, let me just say, Sanford Greene is the name you can trust, fammo... but you don't hear me, so peep:

I'm sorry, that's dope... but anyways here's the other thing
#2) Robert Love and David Walker's sci-fi opus Number 13 makes it's long-awaited debut in the issue. I mean, it opens with the words "Sixty Years after the world ended"... What does it take to impress you people?!?! But seriously, Robert Love and David Walker already blessed me with enough dope stuff to earn my respect, and with this AND the return of Blind Monkey Style on the horizon they're gonna make you love them like Lauryn an'nem... whether you're ready or not.
#3- Jim mothereffing Steranko's groundbreaking graphic novel Red Tide is being re-issued, and DHP #2 will have a 13 page preview, plus an interview with the comics heavyweight. I have never had a chance to read Red Tide, so the news that it was being reissued was welcome. So I'm in there, fammo...
HONORABLE MENTION: here's some other shit that's in the issue.

so yeah, Dark Horse Presents #2 hits stores June 22nd. Cop it!
