Getting good Feedback about our Luke Cage Tribute Issue!

Under cover of darkness, I sent out copies of that Luke Cage Tibute issue (lovingly referred to as the "Sweet Christmas Special" even though it's obviously NOT christmastime) to my subscribers, preorderers and other assorted deserving peeps last Wednesday, and the first reverberations started hitting my various inboxes this weekend...
"the new 'Luke Cage' issue of GhettoManga is off the hook! It rocks in sooo many ways. Loved the way you broke down Bendis' Luke Cage in Alias...."

"How did you get Mike Hawthorne to draw a pinup?!? He's one of my favorites artists!"
-Barry K.

"Mini Battle Men is my new shit! Tell Zees he got a winner on his hands, son!"
-Big Shane
"Wow! Dan Fu's work is very promising! His writing and art are both loose and sharp... a great find!"
-Sara Q.

Yo, I really appreciate that so many people took the time to drop a line, tweet, comment or whatever. The magazine is a labor of love, and every comic, illustration and article is chosen by me. I try to take criticism objectively and constructively, but I definitely take all the love personal.   And juuust in case you haven't bought a copy or subscription yet...

Here's the Sales Pitch:
The GhettoManga Sweet Christmas Special features a gallery of tribute art dedicated to Marvel's resident soul brother #1, with art by lots of underground talent that you need to get familiar with. There's also new comics from Zees Moreno (Mini Battle Men) and Dan Fu (The Retriever), plus articles by Jay Potts (World of Hurt), Corance Davis (GodBody) and more... Back issues of the 52 page full color magazine are already available on IndyPlanet.  You can order single issues for ten bucks each (includes shipping), or subscribe
and get 4 issues for the price of 3!

PREVIEW: GhettoManga Luke Cage tribute issue

I've spent many nights when I should have been sleeping putting the new issue of GhettoManga to bed instead. There were way too many typos and stuff in the proof, so I spent a little extra time fixing them. If you're one of the handful of subscribers or sponsors who have been waiting to see the new issue, I apologize for the delay, but I think it will be worth it...
The GhettoManga Sweet Christmas Special features a gallery of tribute art dedicated to Marvel's blaxploitation-era creation, the newly emergent Luke Cage, littered with art by lots of talented underground comics folks (starting with the cover above by Zees Moreno, an homage to Cage's debut, Hero for Hire #1). There's are also new comics from Zees and Dan Fu. I posted the table of contents below (which I put together in Photoshop) so I wouldn't hafta sell you too hard on this issue...

Back issues of the 52 page full color magazine are already available on IndyPlanet, and the new issue will be too, eventually. However, the first people who will get to read the issue will be those who subscribe or pre-order single issues via the paypal link below. Issues are ten bucks each (includes shipping), or subscribe
and get 4 issues for the price of 3!

Dangerdoom + Space Ghost + ArtNinja = YOUTUBE CLASSIC!!!

Somebody posted a youTube joint with the Dangerdoom song Space Ho's and included this fly art piece by Myron Macklin...

you probably recognize this piece if you bought the Fall 2009 issue of GhettoManga Quarterly magazine, which was all about the mighty MF DOOM. Myron is a perfect example of the kind of under the radar artists that are out there burning the midnight oil. Peep more of his work at ArtNinja.com. If you missed out on the MF DOOM issue, don't sweat it...  You can click here to order  it on Indyplanet.

"Mini Battle Men" joins GMQ Lineup!

I'm happy to inform you that Zees' sci-fi comedy webcomic Mini Battle Men will make it's print debut in the GhettoManga Sweet Christmas Special, which we are feverishly assembling at this very moment...

In case you didn't know, the Sweet Christmas Special will feature fan art, redesigns and commentary about Marvel's resurgent Blaxploitation holdover Luke Cage, also known as Powerman! I have been getting in some nice stuff from both pros and amateurs, so I expect readers will be happy with this issue's editorial content...
Of course, GhettoManga readers already know all about ZEES, who won our MF DOOM art contest and drew the cover art to the issue featuring the world's greatest rapping supervillain... and lately we've been encouraging readers to check out his fresh webcomic Mini Battle Men, which tells the story of three invincible warriors who helped their planet overthrow the tyrannical bureaucrats who ruled for a century, only to find themselves horribly bored. Unable to bear the burden of living in a utopia, the trio set their sites on the Earth, a land rich with greedy, self-serving bastards they can pummel.
In celebration of the Mini Battle Men print debut, Zees drew this awesome cover to the Sweet Christmas Special, a slick parody of Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1. Like I said, we are working hard to have the 52 page, full color magazine out in the second half of December, so expect more announcements about it as the time approaches. You can be the first kid on your block to get the issue by subscribing to GhettoManga Quarterly on the blog sidebar. You'll get 4 issues delivered to your door (for the price of three!), exclusive offers on GM stuff, random freebies in the mail, and I'll even throw in a drawing of any character you want, FREE! I don't know how long that offer will last, but it won't be forever... so get in where you fit in!

GMQ Fall issue available on IndyPlanet!

Word is starting to come back positive from the preorderers and subscribers, so I can confidently report that the Fall issue of  GhettoManga Quarterly doesn't suck! And now you can cop it on IndyPlanet. Here's the Sales Pitch and some preview pages
IN THIS ISSUE:
*MANCHILD by Samax Amen- In this corner we have a pissed off three-year-old with a thirty eight revolver. In the other corner, we have a cybernetically enhanced retrieval team hellbent on bringing the kid back to... whatever...
*IF I WAS DICK by Joshua Boulet- Let me just say this: Dick Chaney is SO gangster... you don't even KNOW!!!
*PYROTECHNIC PORNO BABIES: YETI SPERM by Brock Rizy - no, that's not a typo. There really is a comic in this issue starring the super-short geniuses that the mayor calls to tackle problems too OFFENSIVE for the regular authorities handle!

We also have a review and an eight page preview of FELIPE SMITH'S groundbreaking culture clash manga PEEPO CHOO in our Right-to-Left section, courtesy of Verticle. All that PLUS Corance's Top 5, BegBorrowSteal, Movies That Should Be Comics, and more!

Dope, right? So anyways, click here to order or subscribe on the blog sidebar.
We don't have any shows planned for the rest of the year, so this is pro'lly the best way to cop this issue, unless You can wait until 2011. Or I guess you can have your comic shop email me at whatever@ghettoManga.com to order one for you. If any more shows are added to the schedule, I'll be sure to let you know!

Now seeking Powerman/Luke Cage art! Submission details here-->

I'm soliciting submissions to my magazine GhettoManga Quarterly, and would like to invite you to submit. This issue's theme is Powerman/Luke Cage (the "Sweet Christmas Special" chuckle).
Pinups, tribute art, parody, redesigns (everyone always seems to hate the new cage designs), strip comics, full page comics shorts, cosplay... any medium is welcome! If you have a pre-existing piece, that's okay (submit as many pieces as you want) The book will be in Full Color, but black and white is fine. Do whatever you feel most comfortable doing (collabos are also fine, just make sure the other person is okay with it). :D

You are encouraged to write a little bit about your piece (why you chose to redesign Luke Cage's costume, your favorite [or least favorite] Luke Cage comic story, etc), but it isn't required.

The deadline for submissions is NOVEMBER 12*. I don't have money, but I am happy to offer an art trade for a future project of yours, or a free/discounted commission piece if your piece is accepted and used in the book.

feel free to ask questions here or by note.

Submissions should include the artwork (preferably a jpg at 300 dpi) and a brief description/bio to run with the art. Please don't put your url on the piece. Put in in the email/description/bio and I will make sure it is in the book.

send submissions to submissions@ghettoManga.com and use the subject line POWERMAN ART.

SPACE IN THE BOOK IS LIMITED, so don't get mad/offended if I don't use your piece. It's not personal, and just because you don't make one issue doesn't mean we can't work together in the future. :)

* if you can't make the deadline, look out for the next art drive, as I am trying to do the magazine more frequently now!

What Character do you want?

*If I have an existing drawing of the character you want, That's the one you'll get (like, say this Batman Beyond piece). If not, I will draw a new one for you. If you want your own original character drawn, you must supply an existing picture of the character. I'm happy to draw them, but I'm not designing them for you. If you want a copy of an existing print I have, that is probably okay. For an example of the kind of drawings I will be doing, check the 30 minute drawings on my art blog Ziontific. There's a shipping charge of three bucks on all orders, but I might have to get you for a little more if you're in another country, so be advised...
The books will get back from the printer late September. As for the drawings, it just depends on the response. If you have a reason you need your drawing sooner, let me know.

Make Comics! You could save a life...

My wife's evil preteen sister is in town  for her yearly visit, this time for a whole month. So, as you might imagine (especially if you knew her), I'm in the mood to draw some violence against a child! Luckily for me (and her), I'm still finishing up chapter 2 of MANCHILD: Birthday Boy for the summer issue of GhettoManga Quarterly.

now don't go calling the authorities... no actual children were harmed in the making of this comic! Besides which, this kid gives as good as he gets... but I'm getting ahead of myself. For those unwilling to go digging through the old posts to put together what the hell is going on with MANCHILD, just be patient, as the new issue of the magazine will be out soon. You can cop his first ever print appearance in GMQ here or subscribe to the magazine here (if you want, you can get the first chapter with your subscription). For those on the other side of the cheap/broke divide, there will be a MANCHILD webcomic launching later on this year that you can read 100% free, so it's all good either way, right?
Anyways, back to the drawing board!
