PREVIEW- Saint 2

I've run into Wayne Jackson of Austin-based micropublisher Urban Senate at conventions several times and found him to be a cool guy, so I was pleased to see that he had tapped my dude Erik Reeves to draw the interiors for his book Saint, which is now up on IndyPlanet. Erik emailed me these preview pages last night, so I figured you'd wanna see them asap!
Here's the Sales Pitch:
There are no space ships; even if escape were possible, there is no place to go... Other worldly beings watch, as the Earth crumbles and Humanity marches toward extinction. They offer a solution: Your world shall be restored in exchange for your servitude. Humanity's fate now rests with their new Gods or transcends determinism within the hands of their Saints.
In this issue of Saint; General Nicholie Peczersky's courage during the war has earned him the rank of Regent along with the burdens of rebuilding and safe guarding humanity. His troubles increase when Mankind is visited by deific extraterestrial beings know only as the Quantum. World wide disasters, Phantasms and now, Aliens; the work of a Regent is never done...

This seems like an ill premise! Like I said, you can click here to cop Saint #2 on Indyplanet.

Start the day off Right w/ Solomon Infinite Abdullah

My dude Solomon Infinite Abdullah gave me a copy of his album CRITMON (Constant Re-creation In The Moment Of Now) years ago... I remember INSTANTLY  loving this song Chrome Faced Destro for obvious reasons...

"This song is actually not about the G.I. Joe character, except as a metaphor... when people look at you in a negative light, it's actually a reflection of their sense of self, as if  you had a chrome face..." Solomon explains.
I can dig it.
Hopefully, he will forgive me for posting a sweet pic of Destro anyways... Solomon is one of the multitude of rappers I have met since I moved to the Dallas area, and a cool guy besides. I probably met him attending emcee battles (one of my favorte aspects of underground hip hop culture) where he was a constant fixture. Anyways, Solomon dropped CRITMON on bandcamp recently, and I figured I'd pass it along!

"The concept of this album is that each moment of life is to express the highest version of our current selves possible." He shares on the CRITMON bandcamp page, where you can download the album free. "The apparent succession of moments of 'now' are there to facilitate the evolution of what we see as the new and (hopefully) improved versions of ourselves. This album has a plethora of emotions and topics to express. Hopefully, you do too..."

NEW VIDEO- "Rap Money" By the Co-Op

MoNey Stax and The Rapture, known collectively as Conscience Operations (or The Co-Op for those who don't like the big words) are here with the video for their new single, Rap Money...

I first became aware of Stax as half of the mighty female rap duo Vicious Cycle (along side the incomparable Neeky Devero), and met her husband (known in hip hop circles as The Rapture) at a friend's birthday party before I knew he could rhyme. Both of them have the chops when it comes to rhyming and getting their proverbial grind on to turn raps to riches, and they're flexing a bit of both in this video. This song is a brief autobio of their marriage, which is grounded in their love for hip hop. But you'll only know that if you listen to the words, cause this doesn't sound like no love song! These two are all about the bangers, and the beats and rhymes of Rap Money are committed to a producing a screw-faced head nod, while the content just might warm your heart if you let it! Brilliant...

Anyways, Rap Money will be on The Co-Op's self-titled EP which is due to drop in September 2011, but you can download the track free right now, 'cause I guess they're feeling generous.

Start the Day off Right w/the Co-Op

Get ready to rock to the sounds of Conscious Operations, the husband-and-wife duo of The Rapture and Money Stax, who blessed my inbox with their brand new joint, Rap Money.

I don't know what brought these two down to Dallas from New Jersey, but they are a fixture in the hip hop scene here: Stax is currently charbroiling emcees as the not- Neeky- Devero half of the mighty Vicious Cycle (peep VeeCee's video You People and catch a listen at their dope ass debut album The Vagina Chronologue here), and The Rapture has a new EP out with M Slago, Word Life and Dow Jonez (another favorite here in Dallas) called RAMPAGE, as well as his solo record The Point.
Rap Money will be on The Co-Op's self-titled EP which they are putting together as we speak, but you can download the track free right now, 'cause I guess they're feeling generous.

Start the day off RIGHT w/Pikahsso on some Schoolhouse Rawk isht

I don't care what NOBODY say... this mess is dope!

This mess had me dying. Pikahsso is that kinda dude all the time, but he outdid himself here... supplying all the singing, background noises, editing and rhyming... plus, he (like any smart person) is in love with Schoolhouse Rock and it the Verb cartoon really works as the video!
"For those that know me know i've been a VERB Fanatic, A VERB Head, & a Verbadelyck since about 2002 and im obssessed with doing different renditions of the ABC's School House Rock VERB song..." He reveals in the comments to this video. "The beat was originally produced by Erotic but i took the beat and breathed new life into it by redoing the vocals and BrainPhunking the beat with all those different pitch changes & reanimating and arranging the original footage from the classic VERB cartoon... anyway its way to much to explain just look up PiKaHsSo VERB on Youtube all my VERBsions of VERB videos are floating around..."

Start the day off Right w/ Vicious Cycle

The ladies of Vicious Cycle sent shockwaves through the hip hop underground with the release of the single/ video You People off their instant classic album The Vagina Chronologue, and they look poised to do it again with this new track Goosebumps, from the upcoming EP Volume Control which is dropping soon...

The dynamic rap duo of Neeky Devero and Money Stax return with another banger. At 2:19 long, this joint busts in, roughs you up and leaves before you know what happened. I'll definitely let you know when EP Volume Control drops so you can get some more... Until then, definitely click here to peep The Vagina Chronologue (and my review) if you missed it!

Build and Destroy w/Josh Boulet

Here's a brief interview of Dallas area indie comics phenom Josh Boulet (The Green Reefer, The Wrong Night in Texas), conducted by my dude Michael Lagocki...

Brought to you free, via the magic of YouTube...
Josh is an example of someone who was inspired by my early self-publishing efforts as part of the mighty GhostWerks crew, only to be so prolific that he makes me look bad! So the moral of the story is don't inspire anyone. No, wait, that's not it... OH! What I MEANT to say is that if you want to pick an indie dude to ride with, Josh is your man. Beneath his unshaven stoner exterior beats the heart of a hustler! As he hints at in the video, if you order one of his books, you should know that he created it. He printed it. He licked the stamp! Anyways, to read more of my rambling about Josh click here.

Green Reefer, Year One (and a half)...

my dude Josh Boulet is back with a brand new issue of his hilarious stoner comic The Green Reefer, which he gleefully describes as "The Tick meets Cheech & Chong." The new comic will compile all his (and early 2011) strips from Nug and Treating Yourself magazines, plus lots of other stuff loaded in for good measure for the low, low price of $4.20. But because Josh is always in a generous mood, he's got stuff he's giving away as well...
"Email me pics doing the weed signal" says Josh on his blog about the hand gestures seen in the drawing of the Dilated Duo above "and I'll mail you a free surprise!"

Click this pic to get your hands on a copy of The Green Reefer: Year One 1/2, or feel free to click here for a free sample of some of the good stuff he plants on his website!
Enjoy...

Rhymefest Hates Playdough

so a last year when Rhymefest was prepping El Che he did a contest where emcees could submit a verse for his song Give It To Me, and our good man Playdough* of the mighty Deepspace 5 crew stepped up and threw his grown man hat into the ring...

I thought the contest was a pretty cool thing to do. Although I did like the original version Rhymefest did solo better than the one they ultimately chose, I would have loved seeing "f/Playdough" on the tracklist to El Che. Ah well... click here to get more Playdough in your life.

DALLAS- Live Art Auction benefitting Hero Initiative

Location2826 Arnetic (Deep Ellum)
2826 Elm Street
Dallas, TX

Created By

More Info
A NATIONWIDE live art event to take place January 22, 2011. Citites all over the country will hold live events that will feature artists you can watch creating art, then bid on their works in an auction and take the art home!

Proceeds from the art sales will go to benefit the Hero Initiative (http://www.heroinitiative.org/), a charity whose mission is to provide financial or medical assistance to the comic creators who gave us th...eir stories, their labor, and their love but all too often ended up without pensions, royalties, or insurance. This is a serious problem for artists who created work in the golden and silver ages of comics, before creators had fair work contracts. Writers and artists who created the characters you cherish are now in their latter years and facing poverty.

Comicpalooza reached out to artlovemagic because of our ties to the local art community and asked us to be involved. We reached out to a number of friends including Arnetic to hold the event, ROB VICTUM to provide live DJs, and an array of local artists to create live comic book related masterpieces.

Live artists include
James O'Barr (the Crow)
Samax Amen (you know that guy...)
Khalid Robertson (Champion of Children)
David Rodriguez (renowned Dallas painter)
Jerod Alexander (graffiti artist)
Isaac Davies (graffiti artist)
Bob Luedke (Eye Witness)
Michael Lagocki (ghostwerks, artlovemagic)
Trayce Cochran (street artist)
Lawrence Alexander (painter)
Cal Slayton (Shades of Blue)
Christopher Garcia (Marvel/WildStorm/CrossGen
colorist)
Joe Skilz (graffiti artist)

Come be a part of a special night that benefits the people who created the characters that shaped our lives. Incredible music, mind blowing live art, and rare comic collectibles for sale to benefit the charity.

18 and up.
Only 3 bucks to get in.

Hope to see you there!!

these Vicious Cycle chicks spit LAVA!

I laugh a little bit when people say there are no good female emcees... In the Dallas area, you can't take more than a few steps without tripping over a female emcee. But I hang out at underground rap shows... it's pretty much all rappers... Here's the ladies who combine to form Vicious Cycle with the video for You People, off their banging LP The Vagina Chronologue.

I've been a fan of Neeky Devero for a minute. She has the kinda loudmouthed style that will make you turn your head when she comes on stage, and she's nice lyrically, too. When I saw a link on Twitter with her name on it, peeping it was a no-brainer... As you can see (if you watched the video) Neeky is joined by another chick who is mad nice in her own right in Money Stax, whose wordy delivery is a perfect compliment to Neeky's buckshot vocals.

The fun beat selection and humorous spirit of the hooks balance well with the defiant and aggressive content of The Vagina Chronologue, an album made by women who clearly take offense to the stereotypes and low expectations the popular hip hop world projects onto the careers of "girl rappers"... there's no apology for being rugged lyrically, or concern for the fans that dope rapping may alienate. No pandering to the radio. No shortage of profanity. And a punch in the mouth for you if you got a problem with it. Imagine Lauryn Hill and Rah Digga making an album together produced by someone like Showbiz or Diamond D. That's about right, I think. But feel free to listen yourself, and make up your own mind. If you dig it, click here to cop the album on Bandcamp. Maybe if enough people do, I won't have to convince people there are dope female emcees so often.

DALLAS + TALIB KWELI + Ozomatli = RED BULL SOUNDCLASH!!!

I'll be there...

Here's the Sales Pitch:
RED BULL SOUND CLASH RETURNS TO DALLAS WITH INCREDIBLE TALENT, GREETED WITH MUCH ANTICIPATION- Talib Kweli vs. Ozomatli in an Innovative Musical Conversation--
WHAT: Red Bull Sound Clash is an unparalleled, live music conversation and performance between two musical acts with diverse sounds, styles and creativity. This musical battle unfolds as each band fights for the grace and cheers of the audience. Which band will better anticipate the other? Which band will have the strength to keep playing? We will find out and the audience will decide.

WHO: Talib Kweli is a Brooklyn born, American emcee. Kweli first gained recognition through Black Star for his collaboration with fellow emcee Mos Def. Today, he is an undisputed leader in the alternative hip-hop scene, which takes a different approach than mainstream gangsta rap and pop rap…no references to bling and ‘nines’. Kweli is a profound lyricist and perennial favorite among music critics worldwide. In fact, he is one of the most respected rappers of our time. As Jay-Z once put it in his famous Black Album rhyme "If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli."

Ozomatli is a Los Angeles-based, culture mashing, 10 piece band that has been together for more than 14 years. They are hometown favorites and U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors. It’s often said that if you rolled down your car window in East LA and collected pieces of music you heard blasting from passing cars, you could mix all that up and get the Ozomatli sound. It’s a collision of urban Latino, hip-hop and rock, with influences from salsa, dancehall and cumbia, funk, meringue, New Orleans second line, Jamaican raga and Indian raga. If you couldn’t possibly absorb all of that, here’s what you really need to know: Listening to Ozomatli is like taking a trip around the world.
WHEN: Thursday, October 28, 2010
8:00pm: Doors Open
10:00pm: Red Bull Sound Clash Begins
WHERE: The Palladium Ballroom at Gilley’s Dallas
