This interviewer is a young dude who is clearly excited to be interviewing Pharoahe, and has followed him and his comments online. It's shaping up to be Pharoahe Monch week or something here at GhettoManga... I am definitely feeling the new record W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), which dropped this week (on my birthday). It really feels like an indie record. Maybe I'll write an actual review later... I gotta catch up on some drawing right now though...

KRS drops a ton of stuff here. You have to hear his whole thesis on battling for a comprehensive perspective on a subject that rap nerds like myself talk about a lot, but he adds a dimension to it that is rarely thought of. He talks about how he regularly writes battle raps about top ten rappers that he never releases, just in case he finds himself in the position to need to battle them. He also puts the... ahem... PM Dawn incident in perspective, as well as his conflict with Nelly. Oh yeah, and college is a scam.

Pharoahe Monch talks to D-nice

D-nice's TRUE HIP HOP STORIES returns as D dash sits down with the mighty Pharoahe Monch to talk about OH NO, a classic joint he did with Mos Def and Nate Dogg back in the Rawkus days.

Pharoahe Monch is a perfect example of a famous underground rapper. I mean, my wife knows Nas, she knows Rakim and Public Enemy, she knows Mos Def and Kweli... but her eyes glaze over at the mention of Phraroahe Monch, even though I play his music and talk about him all the time...

Conversely, put on the classic joint Simon Says at any party, and you'll know how many rap heads you have in the place by how many lose their minds when they hear that DUN-DUN-DUN-DUN... just count the hands that go in the air the first time he says 'Throw ya hands to the sky'... hip hop heads SWEAR BY Pharoahe Monch, especially his debut solo record, Internal Affairs.

My wife would prrrobably know who Pharoahe was had he NOT taken eight years to come out with his second solo record, the ghettoManga Award winning smash Desire (which I reviewed in-depth for the first issue of GhettoManga Quarterly). But he did, so he remains obscure. Hopefully, next month's release of his upcoming record WAR (We Are Renegades) will help raise Pharoahe's profile a little, but even if it doesn't, I'm expecting it to be another banger!

new + Lauryn Hill = download this

Saw this on the Jungle45 blog, and had to go get the 411 to repost for my peoples... Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammo: Lauryn is officially Back in effect...


This joint was released this week, to the delight of her fans. Unfortunately, she doesn't rhyme on this, just bless the track with the red velvet vocals... click here to download it anyways. No word yet as to whether this was a NEW track or just an unreleased one. But as Hill told Zoe Chace of NPR, her youngest child is two years old, and she feels comfortable to get back in the game again... to that effect, Lauryn will be headlining the Rock The Bells tour this year, so get yourself ready, fam!

I'm also really feeling Conspiracy Worldwide Radio, so you know I'm geeking for this interview where Menace and Montana get with 'print talking about the new GREENHOUSE record, as well as his seemingly endless variety of hustles.
