Bigger Noses, Booty Spanking and Comics Commentary from Brandon Graham

Brandon explains why he doesn't like your favorite artist anymore and adds a little gristle to this chick's nose to amuse himself. And did I mention booty spanking? Yeah, this pro'lly isn't safe for work, but it's it's a holiday weekend, so if you're working, eff your job anyways, right?

New Nose by Brandon Graham
"In my head I've been on my high horse." Brandon says on his blog. "I've been thinking about how important it is that when you figure out how to draw you still push it-- fuck around and take chances.
The reason I regard a lot of mainstream dudes as bullshit is not because they can't draw but because the extent of that is power girl complaining about having back problems. (also, have you seen my new spanking comic?)
It's scary and hard to go beyond what works and a lot of the guys who I think have done some of the best work I also think later found a comfortable place and didn't push it as much.  so yeah great power/great responsibility."

This is why I ♥ Brandon Graham

"As much as I understand a lot of books just arent worth getting in monthly chunks... I'm trying to make stuff to be read in issues."
-Brandon Graham
Most comicbook scholars (stop laughing) agree that the monthly comic is in serious decline. The giant companies are still propping it up and comic shops are pretty much built on serving the weekly traffic of comix nerds showing up to bleed their pull boxes, but it's a foregone conclusion that graphic novels and trades are taking over even hardcore nerds' buying habits. I resist this trend whenever possible. When I'm making money, nothing pleases me more than picking up a bunch of random issues at the local shop, but the reality is that many of those comics aren't worth returning to the next month, and when money's tight, buying a couple nice fat trade paperbacks is a better use of the same bread. In fact, even a good comic is probably a better read in the trade format unless it is specifically designed not to be. But in an economy where readers are increasingly predisposed to tradewaiting*, you'd hafta be crazy to do that, right?

Yes. And Brandon Graham is just the right kind of crazy. After rapping up the twelve issue King City, Brandon has returned to his post-apocalyptic Russian werewolf love story Multiple Warheads, in which he fully intends to create comics that actually read better in single servings. One weapon he will have in his arsenal are his eye-melting double page spreads, which work a whole lot better in single, floppy issues than in the Trade Paperback format. He's also sticking to the upsized issues he used on King City, but fortunately will do Multiple Warheads in color, which will probably help it sales-wise. The larger size really helps Graham's fun, ornate environments pull readers into the story and invest them in his imaginary-yet-familiar world.
Don't get me wrong: Trades and OGN's are taking over (and don't even get me STARTED on the web, iPads, etc)... but comics that are intended to work as periodicals can still survive in the multiplicity of formats that is the modern world of comics... IF they are properly designed! So it's good to see that Brandon understands the benefits and features (to use salespeak) of the format!
Carry on...

PREVIEW: King City #12 by Brandon Graham

If my clandestine sources on the internet can be believed, Brandon Graham's urban fantasy, the dark yet whimsical opus King City, will come to a close next week, with the release of King City #12. If you haven't read this ghettoManga Award- nominated comic yet, it sure as hell isn't MY fault! I've done my level best to make you guys believe a cat can fly... or something. Eff the spoiler-alerts or whatever! LIVE a little and peep this preview, why don'tcha?!?

I can't wait to get my hands on this issue. Word is Brandon will find out within the next few weeks whether the copyright hostage crisis that is Tokyopop will go forward with a trade paperback, and if so, I will be back, intent on selling its cartoony grayscale goodness to you once more! For now, it's back to the drawing board for me!

Couple Multiple Warheads preview pages...

Here's some in-progress artwork from a double page spread from Brandon Graham's long-awaited return to his post- apocalyptic werewolf romance comic Multiple Warheads. Rather than try to think of something pithy or ironic to say about the spread, I'll just let you look at it and meet anyone who wants to discuss it in the comments...

from the previews I've gleaned from Brandon's many web presences, this book will actually be in color. From what I can gather, Multiple Warheads won't see print until 2011, so you will pro'lly forget these pages by then! anyways... To peep some more preview art from Multiple Warheads and Brandon's other projects, click here. You can check out his definitely NOT Safe for Work Livejournal here.

Excercise: A short comic by Brandon Graham

As you know, Brandon Graham is one of my favorite comicbook artists, so I was obviously very pleased when he shared this short story, which originally ran in Meathaus#8. I think you'll dig it...

For whatever reason, Brandon doesn't employ blackspotting in his compositions that much anymore (at least he didn't in King City), opting to use more grey tones. I would love to see more use of black again, now that he's returning to Multiple Warheads. To read more of my gushing over Brandon's work, click here.

Terminator 2029 by Brandon Graham?

I've never read the Terminator 2029 comic, but judging from the fan art he did above, I'd buy it if Brandon Graham was drawing it. I think he should get a shot at it, and here's why:

  1. The bubbly cartoon style. cartoon style and ultra-violence make for a combination that's not for everyone, but I can't get enough of it, and I know I'm not alone! And let's face it: the Terminator franchise could use a shot of humor; if the comics are anything like the last couple movies, it could use a freaking intravenous drip...
  2.  The attention to detail. Brandon's comics are always full. Weaned on a healthy diet of classic hip-hop, European comics and the best manga money can buy, Brandon loves to pack excessive amounts of detail into his pages, that are often overloaded with irrelevant but entertaining detail that creates a rich atmosphere... the world of a Brandon Graham comic gets more (sur)real with every reread. Again, the cartoon style he draws in helps keep the massive details from intimidating the reader.
  3. The wild Imagination. And anyone who's read any of Brandon's comics knows he will push the OMGometer into the red at a moment's notice...He enjoys playing around with the consequences of science fiction, something that should be required for anyone who works on a Terminator property. Because he's so at home on planets that are simultaneously like and unlike our own, Brandon would be perfect for creating characters in the throws of post-apocalyptic war...
Of course, having Brandon on art probably means letting him write it too (which I obviously also recommend)... I've never read a comic he drew that he didn't also write (although some may exist that I'm not aware of). If any Terminatorverse decision-makers are reading this, they should at least consider giving him a back up story somewhere. He's great at sci-fi world-building and exploring weird technology and human (and non-human) nature through daily activity and well-constructed puns. And he probably even finds your kooky continuity charming... so there you go.
I could really see him drawing a story from the point of view of a Terminator (especially a hot female terminator), or a random boyfriend-girlfriend couple in this world gone mad (of course, they would hafta have a pet).
In case you're not familiar with Brandon's work, I'm happy to introduce you! Just click here for more of my blogs about him and previews of his stuff!
