World of Hurt Cover Art!!

If you were smart enough to take my advice and get down with the World of Hurt: The Thrill Seekers Kickstarter campaign, this is the cover art for the hardcover Graphic Novel you will eventually get!

"I received the cover illustration back from my colorist, Jeremy Summey, and I had to share it with all of you..." said series writer, artist and hnic Jay Potts. "I'll finish formatting the book this weekend. The print schedule got pushed back, but once I send it to the printer I'll be able to let you know a firm delivery date for the completed books."

Step up if you wanna get HURT!!!!

Civil rights left black people feeling empowered and self-reliant, and that is part of what fueled the fashion and overall vibe of the decade. If you've never read the ghettoManga Award-winning story of Isaiah 'Pastor' Hurt, a world-class mofo who can fix any problem if you can pay the price, World of Hurt is best consumed as a straight period action story that strives for authenticity, not parody of the era.

"World of Hurt attempts to combine the format and storytelling traditions of classic newspaper strips like Peter O’Donnell’s Modesty Blaise and Alex Raymond’s Rip Kirby with the visceral energy and iconography of the Black action movies of the 1970s, such as Shaft, Trouble Man, and Super Fly..." explains series creator Jay Potts. "Although some of the more lurid and over-the-top aspects of the Blaxploitation film movement certainly lend themselves to satire or humor, the intent of World of Hurt is to use the time period and setting as a departure point for dramatic, urban crime stories in the vein of some of the best Black action films of the 1970s." And it works. Potts has the artistic chops that are less and less common in modern comics where computer effects and expressionistic cartooning seek to replace good, old-fashioned draftsmanship. The solidity of the world Potts creates lends credibility to the peril he throws his characters into, and helps keep readers coming back for more!

I'd say most people who like blaxploitation genre films and comics would love World of Hurt, but it would also be a great surprise for many who lost interest in the genre. Potts manages to deliver all the badass-ness that blaxploitation is known for, without the shuck and jive. PREVIEW: Cubicles: The Movie! (the graphic Novel)

 I was trolling around for previews on CBR and saw an ad for Cubicles: The Movie  and was blown away by it (see kids! Advertising really DOES work)... I guess it's more accurate to say I saw an ad for their Kickstarter campaign, where I found the 7 page preview I've posted for you below. The 92 page sci-fi action comedy tells the story of Wally and Ost, mild mannered office workers who get sucked into a corporate takeover. They are dragged across the galaxy and come face to face with aliens, pirates, and space squid all in an effort to save the company, get the girl, and maybe even get a raise.  

Cubicles creator Walter Ostlie started the comic on the web before taking the book from there into space. 

"I decided Wally and Ost had a larger story to tell. So I wanted to take them out of the office and put this on this big adventure. This made me think of TV shows when they become movies. So that is what I did, I treated the web strip like it was a TV show and the graphic novel like it was a movie..."

"I put my duo in all kinds of crazy situations that had nothing to do with the office building they had previously been stuck in."

Whatever Ostlie's doing, it's worked! He has already raised enough to meet his printing goals, but I pledged the $10 to get my hands on a copy of the book anyways, and I recommend that you do too.
