The company name "Ex-Ma-K-ina-Seven" is a dual reference. The first part comes from the Latin expression "Deus Ex Machina", which literally translates to "God's hand from the machine". It is a plot device whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new character, ability, or object.
The second reference refers to the famous group of Canadian painters known as the "Group of Seven". In the early 1900s, they faced little national or international interest in Canadian painting. Refusing to be satisfied with this diminished status, they forged ahead and sought to express the beauty of the Canadian landscape.
Taken together, Ex Machina Seven is a company of artists from the machinery of modern animation production who came together to forge a new genre of Canadian comics.
The completely free bi-monthly graphic novel anthology Mosaik Project Magazine will be available through Gateway News stands in TTC and GO train stations throughout Toronto and in select branches of the Toronto Public Library starting February 10th.
