Graphic Novel (P)Review- BUFFALO SPEEDWAY by Yehudi Mercado

At the tail end of STAPLE as we were packing up, Yehudi Mercado ran up on me and gave me free copies of volumes 1 and 2 of his graphic novel series Buffalo Speedway. Before I could finish stumbling through my attempt to thank him, he was gone.

I wouldn't be so surprised at how fast Mercado gets in and out of a situation if I knew that this animator, filmmaker and graphic novelist also had another title on his resume: Pizza Delivery Boy! Never having lived the life of a pizza boy myself, I had no idea how interesting it could be... but Mercado knew what I didn't: Every pizza boy has a story, and we get a peek at life in the fast lane in Buffalo Speedway, which tells the story of how Figgs and his fellow drivers at Turbo Pizza handle the busiest pizza day ever in the summer of '94. While the whole city of Houston is glued to the teevee watching the World Cup, the Rockets in the NBA Finals, and O.J. Simpson in the white Bronco, Figgs is trying to decide what he wants to do with the rest of his life. And of course, there's a girl...
(we now interrupt this review with some preview pages...)

Mercado does a great job bouncing between bits of Pizza Boy wisdom (exemplified in "Roller Balls Tips"... sprinkled throughout the book), character development, and a fast paced tale of blue collar glory. The characters in Buffalo Speedway are archetypal but not generic, and Mercado's fast and cartoony art style invites the reader to fill the characters up, so they feel very familiar, even when they're doing unusual things. The mix of blue comedy and sincere emotion would feel right at home in one of the better Judd Apatow movies. Like recent comics-to-film standout Scott Pilgrim, this comic blends the mundane with the fantastic and keeps the perfect balance. With these two volumes of Buffalo Speedway (which I expect to be a trilogy) under my belt, I'm looking forward to the next volume, because I can't WAIT to see how this particular Pizza Boy's story plays out...

PREVIEW- Proof:Endangered #4

If you've never read PROOF (the GhettoManga Award-winning comic about a well-dressed Sasquatch working for a multinational agency that hunts, captures and houses supposedly mythical creatures), then this 5 page preview probably won't mean much to you (the series' star John Prufrock doesn't even appear). You might prefer to click here and read some previous posts about the series.

Looks like the isht is about to hit the fan... I can't wait! If you're new to PROOF, you can get a sense what the comic's about in my older posts about it, or just dive into the deep end and buy Goatsucker, the first PROOF trade paperback collection.

PREVIEW- new Usagi Yojimbo

It's Dark Horse Comics' 25th anniversary, which explains the big 25 on the cover of Usagi Yojimbo #136, the first issue of  the new story arc. If you've never read Stan Sakai's epic saga of a wandering rabbit samurai, this is a good time to jump on board...

Stan Sakai is a master cartoonist, and this looks to be a great chapter in the life of the rabbit ronin! Usagi Yojimbo #136 will be in stores tomorrow, March 30th. Cop it at your local comicshop, or start at the beginning with Usagi Yojimbo, Book 1: The Ronin.
If you REALLY feel like diving in, you can cop the Usagi Yojimbo: Special Edition Box Set collecting the first seven Usagi books, including the earliest stories; the origin story, the Samurai original graphic novel; and literally dozens more.  It also has extra material, some from the long-out-of-print hardcover editions and some brand new: a complete full-color gallery of the more than 50 Usagi covers from that period (never-before-collected); many preparatory sketches; two "non-canon" Usagi stories by Sakai co-starring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (with whom Usagi also shared screen time in the TMNT TV series); and a long career-spanning interview with Sakai. If you've got the bread ($63 as I write this, marked down from $100!), you can click here to cop that. 25 years worth of furry samurai action, suitable for kids yet good enough for you!

start the day off right w/ Big K.R.I.T.

Peep the youTube for the single Dreamin' and cop the free download of Big K.R.I.T.'s new album, Return of 4eva...

There's been a lot of media hooplah about KRIT, but I have been immune to all that for a long time (I'm more concerned about being right than being first). There are very few outlets whose word I trust to turn me on to new music... one of them is my dude GoldiGold's Jungle45 blog, where he insists the Mississippi native is the real deal. Peep the video and click here to download the album Return of 4eva and let me know what you think!

I GOT TA HAVE IT--->"Thunderbolts:CAGE" trade paper back

The moment you've I've been waiting for is finally upon us, Marvel has begun collecting the Luke Cage era of Thunderbolts into TPB

Here's the Sales Pitch:
It's a new era for Marvel's always evolving, always controversial team! The most dangerous people on Earth are now all in one hellish prison, and the only way out is through rehabilitation and contribution to society via The Thunderbolts... under the leadership of the steel-hardskinned Avenger named Luke Cage! So bring on the first participants: Juggernaut! Crossbones! Ghost! Moonstone! And...Man-Thing?

Thunderbolts scribe Jeff Parker does a better job writing Luke Cage than anyone else at Marvel, and not coincidentally, Thunderbolts is easily my favorite Marvel book right now. I don't get to the comicshop as much as I would like, so I'm missing a few issues, which gives me a good excuse to buy this trade... The Hardcover's been out for a minute, but now you I can get the paperback version at the local comicshop or bookstore (or click here to cop it on Amazon).
